How to Take a Screenshot of the iPhone Desktop

016Someone asked me how to take a screenshot of the iPhone desktop. It is very easy to do although a bit of a hidden feature of the iPhone.

Open up the application or web page you wish to take a snapshot of.

Press and hold down the Home Button at the bottom center of the iPhone. Then press the On/Off Button at the top of the iPhone while still holding the Home Button. The screen will flash and you will hear the camera shutter.

The image will now be with your photos in the Camera Roll section.

How to Add a Web Page Shortcut Icon to Your IPhone Home Screen

The Home Screen on the IPhone is made up of Shortcut Icons to your applications. It is possible to create a shortcut on your desktop to your favourite website so it is easily accessed.

Adding a Shortcut

1. Open Safari and browse to your favourite web site. Click on the + button at the bottom of the browser window.

2. Select the Add to Home Screen button.

3. The IPhone will attempt to fill in the screen that follows for you from the title of the web site. However, you can type in whatever name you want here. Click the Add button at the top right of the screen.

4. The shortcut icon will be added to your home screen.

5. If this is your own web site, you will probably see a small image of your web page rather than a nifty icon. To create a special icon for your website you need to create an 57px x 57px image. Do not worry about making rounded corners as the IPhone will do that automatically for you.

6. Save this image in your root folder as apple-touch-icon.png. This image will now be the default icon for your whole web site. If you are unable to save to your root folder, wish to put your image in another folder or wish to name the image something else you may link to your icon in the head section of the webpage like this:

<link rel=”apple-touch-icon” href=”/path-to-image/apple-touch-icon.png” />

Now when you save the web page to the home screen, your new icon will be displayed.

When is a phone not a phone? When it’s an IPhone!

I have never been a great lover of mobile phones. They always seem to ring at the most inopportune moment and texting has never been my favourite pastime. Therefore, when a gadget crazy friend of mine upgraded to the new Apple iPhone 3G and wanted to give me his old one, I was not overly impressed. Afterall, a phone is a phone and just a modern nuisance in this techno-driven world or so I thought…

After little more than one month as an IPhone user, I am now completely won over. What has caused this radical change in attitude?

Firstly, I am now able to carry around my complete CD collection complete with videos, photos and slide shows in my handbag! I’ve had a couple of Ipods for a few years now but when going out I very rarely took an IPod, mainly because my handbag is almost always stuffed to bursting and adding an IPod is probably more than my poor bag could cope with. Now, I have to take my phone but it has the added bonus of also containing some of my favourite music!

The second advantage of the IPhone is having the camera so conveniently at hand. My old mobile phone was just a phone with no camera. (Yes, in the mobile phone department I was pretty much Stone Age). When out and about I would often wish I had taken my camera with me. Now of course, the camera is there!

The third great thing about the IPhone is the possibility of adding applications (known as apps) to it. I downloaded an ebook reader from the ITunes Apps Store. Now I can carry several full sized books in my handbag and read whenever I find myself with an odd minute or two.

Last. but certainly not least, is being able to connect to the internet wherever I am and to receive emails while I am out and about. For quick, simple internet access it certainly beats carrying around a laptop!

Well, these are some of the reasons I am now an IPhone convert. Who would have ever believed it?

My 6 Favourite Free Iphone Apps

Iphone apps seem a bit of a gimmick to me. Who really wants a torch that doesn’t shed much more light than the basic Iphone screen or a hundred other equally useless things filling up space on your Iphone? However, there are some apps I’ve come across that I think are worthwhile installing onto your Iphone. These are my favourite apps, in no particular order:

  • Bookmarks – quickly access your delicious bookmarks.
  • Wikipanion – Accessing Wikipedia has never been faster and easier than with the Wikipedia application, designed for easy search, navigation and display of Wikipedia entries.
  • eReader – read ebooks on your Iphone.
  • Stanza – designed for reading digital publications, including electronic books, newspapers, PDFs, and general web content.
  • Sudoku (Free) – great for passing time in an enjoyable way.
  • Wordpress – publish to Wordpress from your Iphone.

These are the only apps I have found worthwhile to install on my Iphone so far. Do you have a favourite free Iphone App not included here?
